Peace House 2

And forget body building or handwashing clothes -- I firmly believe real librarians are secretly the strongest people on the face of the planet; those boxes are HEAVY! Nevertheless, pictured above is the new mountain, organized and labeled, of boxes filled with books ready to move into th new library once it is furnished with carpet and shelves. It was exciting to see the new pile grow each day, knowing that the more books that made it into the pile meant the more resources to which the students will soon have access.

I had to constantly remind myself to lift with my legs, especially with those boxes of textbooks, whew! If I didn't already have a negative predisposition against anything having to do with science, I definitely did after a week of lugging around entire boxes of high school life science, chemistry, anatomy and biology textbooks. Really, is it necessary they need to be that big? :) And I have to share what made me laugh all week long – one of the science textbooks had a note written on the inside cover: In case of fire, throw Ms. Davis in the hottest part first. Terrible, I know, but I must admit the scrawled handwriting truly conveyed this traumatized 7th grader's pain, and I couldn't help but empathize with the kid. Poor Ms. Davis; if only she'd been a librarian...

My favorite visitor throughout my time there was Yasini, the janitor, who always stopped in to chat, never failing to pop his head in the door and remind me of tea time each morning. The Tanzanians here are so loyal to their tea breaks and are shocked if you choose not to take tea, which I wouldn't dream of doing after sipping my first cup of Kilimanjaro chai brewed with lemongrass and ginger – mmmm good.
