Peace House 5

The week was filled with fun activities, including afternoons of Tanzanian dance at one of the outdoor bandas, netball (basketball) matches, soccer games, drumming club, a talent show on Saturday night (I took lots of video of the acrobatics and the dancing - unbelievable!) and Sunday church service. The young gentlemen pictured above frequently stopped in to check my progress each evening after their study time was completed. One night, as they complained how cold it was, I pulled out some pictures from home of my family and, of course, snow. They were shocked that anything could live in those white, icy conditions. One of the students assured me in a very dramatic manner that he surely would die if he went to Minnesota during the winter!

One of my favorite memories I took away from my time with the student (aside from watching the girls go nuts over the bubbles I gave them) was throughout the Sunday church service. I had brought my Bible with to the service, though once again the entire service was in Swahili so I was a bit at a loss as to what was going on. But then students seated all around me noticed my Bible was in English and began looking up their favorite passages in their Swahili Bibles so I could find it translated in my Bible. Each of the scriptures that the pastor (who - let me tell you - could really preach a sermon; I have no clue what she was saying, but boy could she preach) read, the students automatically made sure we found and compared each verse from each Bible. It was such a precious experience, poring over the word of God together despite the language differences.

“Ninyi, watoto wadogo, mwatokana na mungi nanyi mmewashinda, kwa sababu yeye aliye ndani yenu ni nimkuu kuliko yeye aliye katikadunia.” -1 John 4:4
